Do It Yourself Guide
A Money Saving Alternative
Planning And Organization
Start with sound advice and proper materials!
Take an inventory of what you will be moving.  Determine which items you will need access
to until moving day and begin by packing less essential items.  We suggest things like out
of season clothing, extra linens, good china, etc.  Depending on the amount of packing you
need to do give yourself at least two weeks to complete it.

What Needs To Be Packed?
Not everything can fit into a box!  In general, furniture and appliances will be wrapped and
padded by our driver and crew as part of our standard moving services.  Lightweight, non-
fragile items such as clothing can be left in dresser drawers.  Anything loose and/or
breakable should be wrapped and packed in sturdy cartons.  Please be aware of items that
will require special care such as slate pool tables, pianos, plasma TV's, chandeliers, or
large glass table tops.

Use Professional Packing Materials
Using new, quality packing materials is a big part of getting the job done right.  We have
everything you need!

  • Use Dishpack boxes for all breakables such as china, dishes, crystal and glassware.
  • Use 1.5 book boxes for heavy smaller items such as books, CDs, DVDs, shoes, etc.
  • Use 3.0 medium boxes for pots, pans, toys, electronics, lamp bases, outdoor tools and
    small appliances
  • Use 4.5 boxes for non hanging clothes, larger lamp bases, lamp shades, linens and
nonbreakable kitchen items such as Tupperware, baking pans, etc.
  • Use 6.0 boxes for lightweight bulky items such as pillows, blankets, large lamp
shades, stuffed toys, winter coats, etc.
  • Use Wardrobe cartons with a hanger bar for hanging clothes and drapes.
  • Use Mirror cartons for pictures, mirrors or glass shelves.  Mirror cartons are
telescoping and can be used to accommodate most pictures sizes.  Expensive
framed or unframed artwork should be crated.
  • Use mattress cartons for each box spring and mattress.  We include these free as part
    of our standard moving services.

Tips And Tricks To Protect Your Possessions
Before loading most items into boxes you will want to wrap them to protect against
scratching or breakage.  There are a wide variety of items available for packing: bubble
wrap, foam peanuts, newspaper, etc.
Wrap items up in two or three sheets of material.  Begin from a corner of the material and
fold the sides in as you go.
Larger or odd-shaped items require a similar technique.  Place these items in the center of
the packing material and bring the corners of the material together.  You may need to flip
the item over and wrap it again from the other side.  When in doubt, use more packing
material!  Secure with tape.  Make sure you use a good quality packing tape, not masking
or cellophane (Scotch Tape).
Before packing the boxes, line the bottom with a few inches of wadded packing material or
foam peanuts.  Place large, heavy items on the bottom of the box and lighter, more fragile
items on top.  Plates and books should be loaded vertically to utilize their own structural
strength.  PLEASE DO NOT OVERLOAD CARTONS!  Keep them to a manageable
weight.  Fill in any empty space with additional packing material and then securely tape
boxes closed.  Make sure to label the contents and room on the outside of the box in black
marker to make unpacking faster and more organized.

Packing Room By Room
Living Room: carefully wrap all fragile items and pack in dish packs.  Lamps and lamp
shades should be wrapped and packed into appropriate boxes, typically 4.5 or 6's.  Most
pictures can be wrapped and packed in telescoping mirror cartons.
Expensive framed or
unframed artwork should be crated.
Draperies can be placed on hangers and loaded in
wardrobe boxes.  Sofas, chairs and tables do not require special preparation.  We will
carefully pad and load on our truck.

Kitchen: dishes and glassware should be packed in the same manner as fine china.  Use
lots of wrapping and pack the items in dish packs.  Pots, pans and small appliances should
be wrapped and packed in 3.0 boxes.  Cook books should be packed with the spine facing
upward in 1.5 book boxes.  Boxed or canned non-perishable food may also be packed in
1.5 book boxes.  Tape shut or dispose of any open packages and be sure to wrap glass
jars in appropriate packing material to prevent breakage.  Use or dispose of all perishables
before moving.  You will also need to get rid of cleaning products and other kitchen
chemicals.  Be sure to allow freezers several days to defrost and dry thoroughly so that
mildew does not occur.

Dining Room: here is where your most fragile china and crystal stemware will be packed.
Each item should be carefully wrapped in packing material and placed in dish packs.
Cellular dividers should be used for ALL stemware.  Larger serving dishes will require extra
packing material for complete protection.  Make sure to use extra packing tape on the
bottom of dish pack boxes to secure against the additional weight they hold.  Line the
bottom of the dish pack box with three to four inches of packing material to create a good
cushion between the box and your items.  Load plates first, then serving dishes, cups and
then glassware or crystal.  Fill in any empty space with additional packing material to
prevent shifting.  Silverware should be wrapped in packing material or tissue.  Nest several
pieces together and bundle with packing material.  These can then be loaded into the top
of a dish pack or 1.5 book box.

Bedroom: leave all clothing in drawers, but please do not overload.  Loose items that you
keep on top of dressers can be wrapped and placed in drawers or packed into 1.5 book
boxes.  REMOVE ALL VALUABLES from drawers.  Hanging clothes found in closets can be
transferred directly to wardrobe boxes.  Shoes can be placed in the bottom of wardrobe
boxes or packed in 3.0 boxes.  All mattresses should be boxed for protection.

Bathroom: dispose of any aerosol cans (hairspray, deodorant, etc) or take them with you.
Tape other bottles shut to prevent leakage and pack them in 1.5 book boxes.  Towels and
linens can be packed in 4.5 boxes.  Pack any mirrors in mirror cartons.

Garage: dispose of pesticides, fertilizers, oil and gas.  If you are transporting a lawn mower
please drain the gas tank.  We cannot transport propane tanks.  Small hand tools, toys and
sports equipment should be packed in 1.5 book boxes or 3.0 boxes.  Shovels, rakes and
brooms can be bundled by our crew and shipped without a box.
